Seapunk, Vaporwave, Plantwave Art: I am in that weird place of the internet again, aren't I? (Yes, and it is quite wonderful)

Dolphins, holographic backgrounds, marble sculptures, fiji water bottles, palm trees, elevator music, old windows {yes, the computer one!},some odd Japanese sayings and a very surreal feeling overall.

 “Ah!” you say “Fast food, technology, brands versus classical and renaissance art, plants and the ocean! What could be more obvious? Of course it is a cynical worldview and criticism of our consumerist society! “

Well, at first glance, you wouldn’t be too far off. As many know, Seapunk was actually created as a joke, and many said that the style kind of died as one too. However, after the very quiet Plantwave, which is a rather small niche compared to the other two, Vaporwave emerged from the ashes (I am emitting Witch house here, because I do think that style has some radical points that set it apart from  the three mentioned above). Vaporwave also resembles a joke. A cynical, cold worldview about the presumptuous thing called “Aesthetics”. However, many actually consider Vaporwave to be quite serious stuff. A music genre, and a style of art. Some say that it is groundbreaking while others say it has all been done before. However, Vaporwave leaves us feeling nostalgic, it is relevant nowdays more than when it was created, and the musical genre keeps evolving with each year.

In this post I tried to combine with vaporwave, plantwave and seapunk art some looks that have a matching vibe from the runaway. However, it was actually pretty difficult! All the styles have some pretty similar motives, so I really had to trust my instincts on these ones and try not to fall too much into the most obvious choices (although as you can see I couldn't help myself and let loose with the Alexander Mcqueen ones).

דולפינים, רקעים הולוגרפים, פסלי שיש מהתקופה הקלאסית והרנסנס, בקבוקי מים של פיג'י, עצי תמר, מוזיקת מעליות ווינדוס הישן, משפטים מוזרים ביפנים והרגשה מאוד סוריאליסטית באופן כללי. כמובן שאתם אומרים ששום דבר לא יכול להיות מובן יותר מאליו- זוהי אמנות צינית המבקרת את העידן הקפיטליסטי שאנו חיים בו. ואתם לא לגמרי טועים. יחד עם זאת, אתם טועים מאוד. וזהו בעצם החוט הדק ששלושת הסגנונות  Vaporwave, Seapunk  ו-Plantwave  מנסים לצעוד עליו.

Seapunk בעצם החל בתור בדיחה באינטרנט. ורבים טוענים כי זהו סגנון שגם מת באותו האופן. אבל לא ניתן לדבר על Vaporwave, בן דודו הצעיר יותר, מבלי לדבר על השפעות ה- Seapunk עליו (כמו גם על בן דודו הנישתי והשקט יותר, ה- Plantwave). שני הסגנונות די דומים במבט ראשון אך יש שוני רב ביניהם [במיוחד אם נקשיב למוזיקה שלהם, ששונה מאוד], Vaporwave מהווה עסק די רציני בקהילת האוהדים שלו, עם סגנון מוזיקלי שמשתנה משנה לשנה. למרות זאת, רבים עדיין לועגים רבות לסוג ה"אסתטיקה" שמציג Vaporwave בטענה שזו יומרנית.

בפוסט הזה ניסיתי לחבר עם שלושת הסגנונות לאופנה (שלא הייתה משימה קלה במיוחד כי ניסיתי לא ללכת לכיוון הברור מאליו, אך לבסוף קצת השתגעתי עם כמות ה-אלכסנדר מקווין).

Seapunk

Seapunk- Psychadelic sea, Dolphins and beaches, holographic backgrounds, odd Japanese sayings, teen angst, symbols, palm trees, Classical sculptures, hip hop vibes, old computers and overall a pretty trippy Lisa Frank meets hipster stuff (Is that still a thing nowdays?)

Seapunk- כאמור, הרבה דולפינים ומוטיבים ימיים משולבים עם רקעים הולוגרפים, מחשבים ישנים, עצי תמר, פסלי שיש, כתובות ביפנית ורגש של ליסה פראנק על סמים.

Vaporwave

Vaporwave- the most recent of the three. It has been around for a few years but gained popularity only recently. A pretty elaborate cousin of Seapunk. Often features computer glitches (but Seapunk does too), way more Renaissance and Roman sculpture art, as well as mundane, everyday objects, Vaporwave tends to go a bit easier on the dolphins and sea motives too.

Vaporwave- דומה לסיפאנק, אך עם קצת יותר מחשבים, פסלי שיש, חפצים מחיי היום-יום וקצת פחות מוטיבים ימיים.

Plantwave

As apposed to Vaporwave and Seapunk, which are styles that often feel like the images in them are bursting at the seams, I do think that Plantwave has actually a rather minimalistic feel about it. However, by all means, vaporwave and seapunk would not be the same without this humble style. Sure, the roman-renaissance statues are still there, so are the Nike logos and the overall feel of “Dude, yesterday my dad let me go on the INTERNET! It was SWEET!” is similar. But it feels like the moment Vaporwave and Seapunk go to sleep, it is quiet.

Plantwave- מעט יותר מנימליסטי מהשניים לעיל שמרגישים לעתים כאילו עומדים להתפוצץ מרוב גודש ויזואלי. משלב הרבה מוטיבים מחיי הצומח, לוגואים של חברות, יחד עם מחשבים ופסלי שיש (מה עוד חדש?).מעניק מעין  הרגשה של "אבא חיבר אותי לאינטרנט אתמול! זה היה ג-ד-ו-ל!"

But if it is supposed to be so cynical, why does it feel so good? “If loving you is wrong, then I don’t want to be right”. Well, maybe I am being over-dramatic here. Personally, I think this kind of webpunk art is important. Nowdays, one would think that everything that could be done- has been done. But Vaporwave, as a kind of an art equivalent to street fashion (which I do consider art also!) was able to show us that new possibilities and solutions are still at hand. Vaporwave, as well as Seapunk and Plantwave provides a whole different trip, with combinations, and colors and almost a distinct scent of its own. It is uncomfortable, often nauseous, but also soothing for some reason. And that pretty much what Vaporwave is, both its music and its web-art: an experience you won’t find anywhere else.

I think that Vaporwave is actually a pretty accurate summary of humanity- look at all we’ve got! The technology! The means of self defense! The food! The special effects! Yet… is there something left beside cynicism? Besides joking about the things that hurt the most? And why the feeling of fullness yet the constant hunger for things we cannot find words for? Many of us live with what is called "first world problems", and these styles make fun of those. But where do we stand as a constantly famished society despite all the achievements? Are we allowed at all to be soft and sad? This is exactly where Vaporwave, Seapunk and Plantwave stand. And at those vulnerable moments, without being able to completely disconnect from our present, we look back and say “Ah, how beautiful was the past- the art, the nature, the freshness of everything new!”, because you go to places you do not remember, and miss people that you did not really know. How fast do humans forget and adjust. How brutal  is everything, yet how fragile.  But here I go again, being overly dramatic.

לפי דעתי, הסגנונות הללו, פרט לסיפוק חוויה בעלת אופי חלומי, הם סיכום די מדויק של האנושות עד כה. אבל האם לא נשאר דבר פרט לציניות ביצירות אלו? האם בעולם שאנו חיים בו יש משהו פרט לטכנולוגיה, ומותגים, ומזון מהיר, ובעיות של העולם הראשון? והאם אסור לנו להיות רכים ועצובים ואנוכיים? מדוע עדיין אנו גוועים ברעב למרות שהבטן שלנו מלאה? האם זהו רגש של מפונקות או השתוקקות למשהו אחר לחלוטין? וברגעים אלו מגיעים הסגנונות האלו, עם התפר הדק שבין הדברים ומהדהדים את המחשבות שלנו "אה! כמה טוב היה בעבר- האמנות! הטבע! האופן שבו הכל היה חדש ונוצץ!" כי אנחנו הולכים תמיד למקומות שאנחנו לא מכירים, ומתגעגעים לאנשים שלא באמת הכרנו. ולמרות שלבני האדם היכולת לשכוח ולהסתגל מדוע הכל כואב ומדמם?
